People have enjoyed lingering outside and enjoying the warming weather since the beginning of time. An outside porch or yard is the perfect gathering place to visit with neighbours, pass the time comfortably and watch the world go by. Just as you enjoy your freedoms and rights so do your neighbours. Everyone is entitled to enjoy their properties inside and out, without feeling infringed upon by loud noises (blaring music, barking dogs), smelly garbage, unclean backyards and screaming or fighting neighbours. With a little consideration from each person for the people who live nearby, a sense of community can be created.
The City of Hamilton By-Law Department has been doing spot-checks and fining City residents (home owners and renters alike) across the City for the improper storage of garbage and recycle containers.
The City of Hamilton Yard By-Law 10-118 section 4(5) states;
Every owner or occupant of property shall ensure that all waste which accumulates on their property is:
(a) When not placed out for collection in accordance with applicable City by-laws, in containers and:
(v) Kept in a rear yard located against a building, structure, fence or retaining wall and arranged in an orderly manner.
This means that garbage and recycle containers cannot be in plain view from the street. It is suggested that containers are secured and stored behind your home or in the garage if you have one. High wind garbage days can be challenging; storing recycling and garbage containers properly and in accordance to the City By-laws will help to alleviate the time and expense of cleaning up an unnecessary mess. Please be advised that Kiwanis Homes will not be responsible for payment of any fines associated with improper storage of garbage and/or recycling containers.
Communities change and evolve with the end of the school year. Young people focusing on projects, assignments and exams may not be aware of their surroundings. Please take extra care when driving through neighbourhood side streets, public parking lots and survey complexes. Playground areas may be busier; a child may dart across the road without thought of who may be driving on it. Please remind your child to be careful getting to and from the playground and to be mindful of making too much noise (particularly basketball in the late evening) for the families living nearby.
Are you getting the urge to do home improvements, perhaps painting or maybe even building walls? Please understand that as a landlord we really appreciate when our families keep good care of our homes and make efforts to beautify your living space. However, please provide a written request before you begin renovations to our property. A written letter of permission (perhaps involving some conditions you may not have considered) or denial (with an explanation) will be sent in response. This helps to ensure that you remain in compliance with your lease agreement and prevent unnecessary expense and effort.
Want to enjoy a family movie in a unique setting? For free? Families living in the Sanford Ave. N. area have been enjoying movie night hosted by the local community engagement team known as "GALA". If you live nearby, consider this your open invitation to come join in the fun. Be sure to check out our website for details about the next screening date.
